Today I went to the garden center and bought the starts for my garden. Come harvest time I think I may need to find a food bank, as I don't know if 3 people can use 7 plants worth of tomatoes.
At least there are several different kinds of tomatoes. And to be honest we eat tomatoes in some form at least once a day. Whohead will even just snack on them like an apple if I let her. Anyway, I bought 2 Roma plants, a Grape Tomato & a Sweet 100 which are both miniature varieties. I also purchased a Red Beefsteak, and early fruiting variety called Early Girl and a yellow variety called Jubilee. I had really wanted to find an orange variety as well but didn't have any luck...and now quite frankly I would be out of garden space. I figure if I don't use them all as they ripen we can always have a HUGE pasta cookout with all the neighbors and I can make the red sauce.
I also picked up Sequoia and Allstar varieties in strawberries. Those, along with the raspberries & blackberries I got a couple of weeks ago, should make some great jams if I get really ambitious this fall. Finally I picked up some cilantro & basil plants and for L a couple of snap peas that should grow without having to be staked. If the weather cooperates this week my garden should be planted by the weekend.
Love, love, love homegrown tomatoes!! I'm drooling right now....
Have a great day!
Maria
